A New Tool -- RogueRemover

Having problems with rogue infestations of fake antispyware applications?
Did you download a codec and got a lot more than you bargained for?

Based on the what I see when reviewing the Security Garden visitor statistics, the number of visitors here as a result of Google search results including "codec" "VirusBurst", "SpyAxe", and all the rest. Although I provided removal instructions in Removing Fake Security Programs like VirusBurst, WinMedia & Other Codecs, there is a new tool that will help with these old standbys.

The developer of AboutBuster and other useful tools has just released "RogueRemover". As described by the developer at MalwareBytes:
"RogueRemover is a utility that can remove various rogue antispyware and antivirus utilities. Rogue antispyware applications are applications that rather than remove spyware, provide false positives, distribute malware or spyware, advertise, or provide useless uninstallers. The main point is that rogue antispyware applications are useless and eat up system resources."
In the first release of RogueRemover, it targeted over 60 rogue applications. As of yesterday's update, the removal count is now 71. Rogue registry cleaners will be added soon. In the meantime, this will give some relief. RogueRemover is compatible with Windows 2000, NT and XP.

The instructions are simple:
  • Download RogueRemover from MalwareBytes.
  • Unzip RogueRemover to your computer; i.e., C:\RogueRemover
  • Navigate to the RogueRemover folder and double-click RogueRemover.exe

  • Click Scan and follow the program instructions.
